Integrity, humility, strength, and an unwavering sense of kindness: these are the words that best define my father. They were the principles that guided his every action, the bedrock upon which he built his life. He was a man of quiet dignity and few words, but his gentle humour and the warm twinkle in his eye were ever-present, especially when surrounded by those he loved.

His was a generation that understood sacrifice. Growing up in the shadow of a great war, he learned early the value of hard work and the importance of community. These experiences shaped his perspective on the world, giving him a profound appreciation for peace, stability, and the simple gift of a family gathered around the dinner table. He never took his good fortune for granted, and he instilled that same sense of gratitude in his children.

Dad was the eldest of four siblings and carried that sense of responsibility throughout his life. He met my mother when they were just teenagers and, after a brief courtship, they married and remained devoted partners for fifty-eight years. He was a builder by trade, a true craftsman who took immense pride in his work. He literally built the house I grew up in, and I believe he poured as much love into its foundations as he did into raising his family within its walls. They spent their later years by the coast, enjoying a well-earned rest in a small cottage with a view of the sea.

Though his work was his passion, his quiet moments were filled with books and music. He could often be found in his favourite armchair, a history book in his lap and the soft sounds of his beloved jazz records filling the room. As a father to my brother, my sister, and me, he was our steady hand. He didn’t need to raise his voice; his quiet expectation that we do the right thing was more than enough. He taught us not through lectures, but by example – how to be dependable, how to be honest, and how to treat others with respect.

When I became a parent myself, our relationship found a new depth. We would spend hours talking, not just about the challenges of raising children in a world so different from the one he knew, but about life itself. He never offered easy answers, but instead, shared his perspective with a gentle wisdom that always brought clarity. "Be steady," he would tell me. "Be the calm in their storm, and they will always know where to find shore."

To me, Dad’s most remarkable quality was his quiet strength. I remember once, as a reckless teenager, I damaged his most cherished set of woodworking tools. I was terrified of his reaction. Instead of anger, he simply looked at the damage, then at me, and said, "Well, let's learn how to fix them together." In that moment, he taught me about forgiveness, patience, and the idea that nothing is truly broken beyond repair.

The silence he leaves behind is deafening. It’s hard to grasp that I can no longer call him for his quiet advice, or just to hear his calm, reassuring voice. The grandchildren, Sophie and Jack, will miss their grandpa's gentle games and warm hugs. He was a man in full, blessed with a long and purposeful life, and his health was robust until the very end. His presence was a quiet anchor for us all, a source of stability in a sometimes-turbulent world.

Today, as we gather to honour his memory, we say goodbye to a man of profound integrity and quiet grace. He was a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a friend. He built a legacy not of stone and wood, but of love and character, and that is a legacy that will endure in all of us, forever.
